Fresh hits this 2014

Kollywood

The year 2014 has started on a positive note for Kollywood, with Ajith’s Veeram and Vijay’s Jilla, which hit the screens ahead of Pongal, opening big and running successfully. It has been a long time since films of two big stars released simultaneously and both turned out to be hits.

Trade pundits, who were not so happy with the way 2013 ended (the year saw only a few genuine hits), are now looking forward for a bright year ahead, as films involving big names, including Superstar Rajinkanth and Kamal Haasan, are gearing up to see the light of the day in the coming months. An exciting year is in store for fans too, if one is go by the list of movies that are getting ready.

Bigwigs’ flicks

Rajinikanth’s movie Kochadaiyaan has been in the making for a long time, and if sources are to be believed, it is sure to hit the screens this summer. “The film might have missed deadlines, but will not miss hitting the bull’s eye once it’s released,” says an unit source, quoting a favourite punch-line of Rajini — ‘Naan late ah vandhalum latest ah varuven’ (Even if I arrive late, I will be the latest).

Directed by Soundarya Ashwin Rajinikanth (the name says it all), Kochadaiyaan is being touted as the first Indian film, to be made using 3D motion capturing technology. Deepika Padukone is the leading lady, while music is by A R Rahman. Big names like Jackie Shroff, Sarathkumar, Nasser and Shobana form the rest of the cast.

Vishwaroopam II, sequel to Kamal Haasan’s 2013 hit Vishwaroopam, is expected to be bigger and bolder than its first part. Those who have watched its trailer are already in awe of it. With the first part courting enough controversies before its release, Kamal is said to be taking extra care to ensure that Vishwaroopam II is free from criticisms and fair to all. A major portion of the film has been shot abroad.

Written and directed by Kamal himself, who has also played the lead role, Vishwaroopam II is produced by Aascar Films in association with Rajkamal banner. Pooja Kumar and Andrea Jeremiah are the leading ladies, while Ghibran of Vaagai Sooda Vaa fame is composing the music. The film is slated to be released by March or April.

A parade of stars

Director Shankar’s magnum opus Ai has Vikram in the lead. For this mega budget movie, the Dhil and Dhool actor has shed more than 25 kilos and looks like a teenager in one of his get-ups. Writer(s) Suba have penned the dialogues. Top Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi and thespian Sivaji Ganesan’s elder son Ramkumar are playing key roles. A source from Shankar’s camp says around 90 per cent of the shoot is over.

The collaboration of Ajith and Gautham Vasudev Menon has been in the offing for nearly five years and it has happened at last. According to circles close to Gautham, the film, which is still untitled, will hit the floors on February 15. To be produced by Sri Sathya Sai Movies backed by A M Rathnam, the film is expected to have musical score by A R Rahman. Gautham is said to have come up with a stylish script, which has loads of action and romance.

Though the film is rumoured to be a sequel to Thupakki, there is no official confirmation from either Murugadoss or Vijay in this regard. All that they say is they will start working together again soon, and the film will be a treat to the audience. While Samantha is said to be the heroine. Murugadoss, according to sources, will ensure that the movie will hit the theatres for Diwali this year.
