Legislature session from today

Legislature session from today

The Karnataka legislature session will commence on Wednesday with Governor H R Bhardwaj’s customary address to the members of both the Assembly and the Council. The governor’s address is scheduled at 12 noon.

The Siddaramaiah government is likely to come under Opposition attack over various issues, including the death of sub-inspector Mallikharjun Bande in Gulbarga, with the BJP gaining additional strength following B S Yeddyurappa and three other MLAs of the KJP joining the saffron fold.

The BJP will get the principal Opposition status in the Assembly. A formal announcement in this regard will be made in the House on Wednesday after the governor’s address, Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa told reporters on Tuesday.

Currently, the JD(S) is the principal Opposition party in the Assembly with H D Kumaraswamy as its leader. With the KJP MLAs joining the BJP recently, the strength of the saffron party has gone up to 44 and hence it will get the principal Opposition status.

But the BJP is yet to announce its Leader of the Opposition. It is said that former chief minister Jagadish Shettar is likely to be made the Opposition leader. Shettar is the floor leader of the BJP in the Assembly.

B R Patil from Aland and Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli from Bidar, who have refused to join the BJP, will continue as KJP MLAs.

No bills yet

The Speaker said the government had not come up with any bills to be tabled in the session, the first of the new year. However, the government can come up with bills in the coming days. The session is scheduled to be held till January 30.
