Though there is a scope for tourism in the district, lack of basic amenities has been discouraging the explorers. Makkala Gudi Betta, near Somwarpet is one among them.

The Tourism department has completely neglected this picturesque hillock.
The hillock, which is just 17 km away from Somwarpet, will be one of the favoured picnic spots if basic amenities like good roads and lodging facilites are provided.
It is said that the place was frequented by cowherds for many decades, who had built a temple by arranging small rocks.

Even today, people from surrounding villages perform puja on the day of Shashti.
A visual treat awaits one atop the hill. Apart from a great view of the green mountains, one can also spot Bajagundi village, the historical Madapura fort, backwater of Harangi dam, and green coffee plantations belonging to Tata group, and others. There is a small lake on the top of the hillock.

How to reach

One can reach Makkala Gudi betta by hiring a private vehicle from Somwarpet. If one leaves Madikeri in KSRTC bus to Kirangadoor via Biligere at 7 am, one can reach Makkala Gudi betta.

Inspite of its potential to attract visitors, lack of basic facilities is preventing visitors from visiting Makkala Gudi Betta. About 280 metre road leading to the betta has been asphalted. The remaining 300 metre road needs to be asphalted. A water tank on the top of the hillock is awaiting maintenance.

The villagers said that the road leading to Makkala Gudi Betta has to be asphalted. Drinking water facilities should be provided to the visitor. A watch tower should be constructed to get a better view of the nature.

Signboards at vantage points and a rest room on the top of the hillock are a few basic facilities which needs to be constructed.
