Monappa (50) and his son Srinath (12) who were residing on 1st Floor, S1 Block, 'Mini Tungasankirna' KSRP quarters in Madivala were killed on the spot. However, Monappa's wife and three children escaped with minor injuries. Srinath was studying in 4th standard at the Mount Carmel school while Monappa was on deputation to the Excise and Lotteries Department.

Sources confirmed that the government official had allegedly stored huge quantities of petrol at his residence, illegally. Around 7.25 pm, since there was no power in the area, Monappa lit a matchstick to light a candle and invited death. Accidentally, the flame came in contact with the inflammable material and blew up. The father and son who were in the hall, were charred to death. Monappa's wife and one of her daughters in kitchen and the other two children in the room managed to escape. The house was also badly damaged. There was confusion for a while as to what triggered the blast. The cause for the explosion came to light after senior officers visited the spot.
