Manipuri teenager raped in Delhi

Last Updated 08 February 2014, 19:11 IST

Even as protests over 19-year-old Nido Taniam’s death refuse to die down, another incident of violence against a person from the North-East has shamed the national capital.

This time, a 14-year-old girl visiting her aunt from Manipur was allegedly raped by a 19-year-old boy in south Delhi's Munirka on Friday.

The accused has been arrested, said the police. The incident triggered protests outside the local police station.

According to the police, Ashish alias Vicky kidnapped the girl when she went to purchase a dish-washing bar from a nearby market at around 10:30 pm on Friday. “She was raped and kept confined for around an hour in an empty room on the ground floor of Vicky’s house,” said a police officer.

As she did not return home for over an hour, members of the girl’s family went to Vasant Vihar police station and filed a missing-person complaint. She was found when they were returning home.

“The victim was crying when another neighbour spotted her and decided to escort her home,” added the officer.

The girl was traumatised, but narrated the incident to her family. She was later taken to the police station, after which a medical examination was conducted on her at Safdarjung Hospital.

“The medical examination confirmed sexual assault. She also underwent treatment for minor injuries and her condition is much better now,” said the police officer.

A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station on the basis of the victim's statement and medical examination.

Vicky was arrested on Saturday morning and sent to judicial custody.  “He had struck up a conversation with the girl before managing to lure her to the room,” said the officer.
The girl had come to Delhi last month and was looking for a job as domestic help. Vicky stays in the neighbourhood of the rented house of the girl’s aunt.
