More than 3,000 cycling enthusiasts took part in the Vodafone Cycling Marathon in the City on Sunday.

The youngest participant was a three-year-old kid who completed a lap around the stadium in his miniature bicycle and the oldest was a 68-year-old retired banker who tried competing with youngsters.

The event also saw a large crowd of spectators who enjoyed watching the stunts performed by professional cyclists.Different kinds of cycles were on display and cyclists were treated with some soothing music from the well-known music band ‘Indian Ocean.’The event, aimed at promoting cycling as a healthy lifestyle, was flagged off at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium.

Akash Singhania, who had come from Mysore to witness the event said, “I did not expect such a huge turnout. It is a wonderful event to watch as thousands of cyclists have come together to take part in the marathon.”

Traffic snarls

However, with  thousands of cyclists hitting the road, traffic snarls were witnessed on Vittal Mallya Road, Kasturba Road, Hudson Circle, Cubbon Park and surrounding areas. The traffic was blocked when four different events of the marathon were flagged off from Kasturba Road.

A senior traffic police officer who was manning the traffic at Kasturba Road said, “There was a jam only for a few minutes since we stopped vehicles at traffic signals as the event was flagged off and when the cycles passed we opened up the route for traffic. Due to the piling up of vehicles, there was a jam near Hudson Circle.”

The official further added that vehicles moving towards Majestic and KR Market were held up for a while but traffic constables cleared roads and made it easy for the public.
