Couple chose to part ways, husband’s role suspected

A married woman was attacked with acid by an unidentified youth on Saturday night at Shakarpur in east Delhi. However, she sensed the attack on time to escape any serious injuries.

The woman has accused her husband to have carried out the attack. She was married one-year ago to a Faridabad-resident. But the couple chose to file for divorce within four months of the marriage after domestic issues cropped up between the woman, her husband and in-laws right after marriage. The woman said she finally chose to stay with her family at Mangal Bazaar in Laxmi Nagar.

At around 8.15 pm on Saturday, someone knocked at the door of victim Ranjita Avasthi’s house on the first floor. The woman opened the door to find a young man who said he wanted to meet her father.

Even as she was about to respond, the man allegedly hurled a bottle of acid at her. “But the woman has sensed danger and moved in time to prevent the acid from falling on her face.

The attacker took advantage of the poor lighting in that part of the lane and fled immediately,” said a senior police officer. The woman, meanwhile, raised an alarm. Her family rushed in to find her collapsed on the floor. Police was immediately informed of the incident and she was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital.

No serious injuries

“Doctors discharged her after providing treatment. She was not required to be admitted to the hospital,” police said. “She has suffered eight per cent superficial burns, but face was saved from the attack. She is burnt in her neck and some lower parts of the body,” said the officer.

A case has been lodged at Shakarpur police station and police are taking the help of the victim to sketch a portrait of the attacker in a bid to nab him. Her husband is also being questioned in this regard, but has not been arrested yet.
