Held for stealing 19.5 lakh

Two salesmen of a cloth shop in Chickpet, who had allegedly made off with Rs 19.5 lakh in cash after closing down the store for the day on February 9, were arrested in their hometown, Cooch Behar in West Bengal, on February 16, police said.

Prasanjit Das, 24, and Aneek Dutta, 23, were arrested in Cooch Behar after the police traced the latter’s elder brother who then led them to the suspects’ native place. The suspects, police said, made off with cash after closing down Nakoda, a cloth store, for the day in the afternoon (it was a Sunday) and handing over the keys to the owner, Jinesh, as was the usual practice.

The owner realised that the cash was missing only when the security guard found the store’s door open at night. Jinesh made a complaint to the police who then checked the suspects’ antecedents. The suspects were staying at a rented house in Kempapura Agrahara but the police did not find them there.

Investigators later found that Dutta’s elder brother had stayed in the same house a year ago. They then traced him to a private company in the City. He led them to Cooch Behar where the suspects were arrested. Rs 13 lakh of the stolen cash has been recovered, police said, adding that the suspects “wanted to lead a luxurious life.”
