Publisher Aleph looks for 'right resolution' to Doniger book

Last Updated 05 March 2014, 10:29 IST

Publishers of US Indologist Wendy Doniger today denied reports that they had withdrawn copies of her book 'On Hinduism' from the markets.

"We are not aware of any such thing except that we are looking forward to the right resolution of the situation," said a statement by Aleph Book company, operating under parent company Rupa.

The statement attributed to R T Das, Rupa Publications, Regional Manager, South India denied news reports which indicated that representatives of the publisher phoned bookshops in Bangalore asking them to return copies of Doniger's book published in 2013.

Delhi-based group Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti (SBAS) had on March 1 demanded that the publisher stop sales and pulp all remaining copies of the book, whose contents they said were "malicious and offending."

This follows in the wake of Doniger's 2009 book, 'The Hindus: An Alternative History', being pulped by Penguin in the month of February.

"There will be no further comment made by any employees of Aleph or Rupa at this time," the publishers said. PTI ANS PMS 03051432
