Husband gets life term for woman constable's suicide

Ganesh Babu, husband of woman constable Niranjini who committed suicide unable to bear the torture by him, his sister Kaveri and his mother Gangamma, was on Friday convicted and sentenced to life by VII Fast Track Court.

The court, after hearing evidence and witnesses, awarded life imprisonment to Babu.

Kaveri and Ganagamma were acquitted for want of proper evidence.

Niranjini, who was attached to the Mico Layout police station, in her death note had named Babu. Being constantly abused for dowry, she hanged herself at her residence in Devarachikkanahalli near Mico Layout on July 17, 2009.
In her one-page death note, she blamed her husband and in-laws for her death.


In her diary, she had written about Babu’s unruly behaviour, police said.

A law graduate and native of Kaddur in Chikmagalur, Niranjini, after her studies, was appointed constable in the RT Nagar police station.

She met Babu, who claimed to be a real estate developer, and he began visiting her. The two soon got married. Niranjini was shifted to the Mico Layout police station after the birth of her child.

11 held for cricket betting

Eleven people were arrested on Thursday by the Central Crime Branch police following a raid on a cable TV office where cricket betting was going on.

Based on a tip-off, they stormed into Citi Cable office located on Sarjapur Main Road under the Varthur police limits and arrested those engaged in betting on the semifinal the T-20 cricket match between Sri Lanka and the West Indies. The police recovered Rs 1.45 lakh, 13 mobile phones, four bikes and a television.

Further investigation is on to ascertain whether the racket is being operated across the State, police said.
In another incident, Dugar Singh, 21, involved in selling fake wires under the Finolex brand at his shop ‘Maruthi Electric Corporation’ in MG Plaza in the Chickpet police limits, was arrested and fake wires worth Rs 1.5 lakh seized. Both cases are registered in the respective police stations.
