Upset over her nephew’s decision to elope with a girl against the family’s wish, a 42-year-old woman shot herself dead with a country-made pistol at north-east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar on Tuesday evening.

A police officer said that while the woman was attached to her nephew and his marriage a few days ago left her depressed, a heated exchange of words with her husband over the issue prompted her to take the extreme step. The source of the pistol used to commit the suicide is also being investigated. “Though her husband is denying it, we suspect he brought home the illegal weapon a few days ago,” the officer said.

No suicide note has been recovered from the spot. The pistol allegedly used by her was recovered next to her body.

The victim Krishna Devi, a homemaker, lived with her husband, son Ajit and two daughters Neelam and Gulshan at Sonia Vihar.

Her husband Sultan Singh runs a garment business in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar.“The victim’s husband said he was watching television with one of his sons in the drawing room at 6 pm when he heard the gunshot from the bedroom. He tried to open the door but found it bolted from inside,” the officer said.

Some relatives and neighbours broke open the door and found the woman fatally injured. They took her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead due to excessive bleeding.

Police said her husband informed them about the incident. The husband and some relatives were questioned and they said she was depressed for the past few days.“Her sister’s son had eloped with a neighbourhood girl some days ago.

Since she was very close to her sister and her nephew, she could not come to terms with the development. She killed herself after a discussion with her husband, who claimed to have told her to gather herself for the sake of their children,” the officer added.

The body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem and a case was registered.
