'Govt is planning to demolish old buildings in Lalbagh'

The Lalbagh Walkers Association has also alleged that the government was planning to demolish the old and beautiful structures inside Lalbagh and so that contracts could be awarded for the construction of new buildings.

The Association staged a demonstration on Sunday to oppose the move.

The issue was mainly raised by one Kempanna, who stated that he came to know through his sources that the Government was planning to demolish old structures inside Lalbagh. The protesters also said that the decision to introduce ID cards was against the rights of the masses to breath fresh air.

‘Inappropriate move’

Speaking on the occasion, educationist Narasimhaiah said the adamant stand of the government to execute its plan was inappropriate. The government should think sympathetically over it, he said.

The walkers along with many green groups and students’ associations have embarked upon a campaign to ensure that the Lalbagh identity card plan is withdrawn.
“We will be submitting a memorandum to Minister for Horticulture Umesh Katti on the matter. If that too does not yield any result, then we intend to sit on a dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s residence,” said Lingaraju, one of the demonstrators.

According to Lingaraju, the entire ID card process only indicates a possible  privatisation of the parks.

“The ID cards for these parks is quite unnecessary. If the only available lung space in the City is made exclusive, where will the common man go?” asked Lingaraju.

Gurushanth, one of the members of the Lalbagh Walkers Association, said the movement would continue until the government withdraws its move.
