Woman held for killing husband

After the murder, she herself had filed a habeas corpus plea

The Mico Layout police have arrested Usharani, 38, who had allegedly killed her husband Muniraju, 46, with the help of her daughter’s boyfriend.

The police have also arrested Mahesh, 24, of Chikka Adugodi and boyfriend of Usharani’s second daughter, and Suresh, 29, a relative of Mahesh and a resident of Vemgal near Kolar.

On March 23, Usharani had lodged a complaint with the Mico Layout police that her husband Muniraju, a resident of SG Palya, had gone missing from their house on March 21. She stated that Muniraju had left home at around 11 am but had not returned, said police.

The police were making efforts to trace Muniraju but in vain. Usharani had alleged that the police were not serious in tracing Muniraju. She had even filed a habeas corpus petition on April 10.

The police had gone to other districts and states as well in search of him. They had also gathered information about him from his family and friends, said a police official.

“Vijayakumar, a friend of Muniraju, approached the police and informed them that from the day Muniraju went missing, there was a change in the behaviour of Usharani. He also said that she was often seen roaming around with Mahesh.

The police found something fishy and questioned both of them. When they were confronted with their mobile phone call records and other clues, they confessed to have murdered Muniraju.

They said that on March 21, they gave Muniraju buttermilk laced with sleeping pills and later smothered him with a pillow. On March 22, between 2 am and 5 am, they took his body in a car to an eucalyptus grove near Hoskote and burnt it. They first took his mobile phone to Andhra Pradesh and later disposed it of in Bangalore Rural district, only to misguide the police.

The police went to the spot where Muniraju’s body was burnt and collected the skeletons, burnt clothes and the soil for testing. Later, it was confirmed that the body was that of Muniraju. When questioned, Usharani said Muniraju used to come home drunk and harass her. He was also against her daughter’s relationship with Mahesh.

Usharani’s second daughter, who is pursuing her engineering degree, had come in contact with Mahesh, a car driver, who used to frequent her near the college.

High Court slaps Rs 1 lakh fine

The High Court on Thursday imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on Usharani for misleading the court by filing a habeas corpus petition complaining against the police stating that they had failed to find her husband.

The police later submitted to the court that petitioner herself had murdered her husband. A division bench comprising Justices N Kumar and H Billappa dismissed the petition after imposing a cost of Rs one lakh on the petitioner for misleading the court. Usharani had filed a habeas corpus petition on April 10.
