Many have become roof-less and suffered losses in their agriculture land as crops were marooned due to heavy rains. Damage caused by the rains is estimated to be more in Bellary, Raichur and Dakshina Kannada, than other districts.

One person each in Raichur and Bellary died due to rains. Marulasiddappa, in Hagaribommanahalli reportedly died after he was stuck in hailstorm for a long time. Shivappa of Somalapur in Sindhanur taluk in Raichur district died as he came in contact with a live electric wire from an electric pole which was uprooted following heavy rains.
Deputy Secretary (Disaster Management) C S Desai said that the district administration was yet to send detailed report on damages caused due to rains. “District administration has to verify whether the deaths were due to rains. Once the government confirms that the deaths were due to rains then it is the responsibility of the government to give compensation. District administration is expected to send in reports in three-four days,” he said.

Nearly 700 houses were damaged in Hagaribommanahalli alone. Farms of banana and coconut were damaged in Hospet, Hoovinahadagali and Sandur taluks. Over 40 houses collapsed and another 200 damaged in Lingsugur, Deodurga, Manvi and Sindhanur taluks of Raichur. Pre-monsoon rains help farmers prepare their ground for kharif season. Farmers in areas which receive good rain start sowing operation. According to Agriculture Department director Dr K Rajanna, in the pre-monsoon period sowing has been done in nearly one lakh hectare of land. Particularly in Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Hassan and Chikmagalur districts, which received good rains, the sowing operation is more active compared to other districts, he said.

Regarding the loss of crops due to rains, he said the extent of loss was being assessed by the officers of Agriculture Department at district levels. During the rains two weeks ago horticulture crops in Chikballapura, Tumkur and Kolar districts were affected badly. The total loss was said to be around Rs 10 crore, he added.
