The new mayor of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation is said to be the youngest mayor ever in the national capital.
Meenakshi, a 34-year-old councillor from Shiv Vihar, was elected as mayor of the east civic agency on Tuesday.
But the election process was disrupted for some time as opposition councillors objected that outgoing mayor Ramnarayana Dubey could not take part in voting.“The rule says that the outgoing mayor can vote and the opposition should read the rule book first,” said B B Tyagi, leader of the House in East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Later, leader of opposition Varyam Kaur asked her councillors to let the election process continue and then voting was resumed.
Meenakshi defeated Congress candidate Tulsi with a margin of nine votes. A total of 60 votes were polled, of which Meenakshi secured 34 votes while Tulsi got 25 votes and one vote was declared invalid.
“I would want to live up to the expectation of the party. I want to work for the welfare of Delhiites,” said Meenakshi. “Education, sanitation and health will be our priority.”Both BJP and Congress agreed to adopt the same result for the election of the deputy mayor of East Corporation. Jai Gopal Verma was declared elected by defeating Congress candidate Aas Mohammad.
BJP’s B B Tyagi and Ramnarayan Dubey and Savita Sharma of Congress were elected unanimously as members of the standing committee of East Corporation. In 2012, she won the elections with maximum number of votes. In 2013, her ward won the award for being the cleanest areas in the East Corporation. She was a deputy chairperson of the health committee and she played a vital role in the construction of a 50-bed hospital in Karawal Nagar.
BJP’s Anita Arya was 36 when she was elected mayor of the unified corporation in 1999. Former mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation Sarita Chaudhary was elected for the post when she was 38.
