Singer Ankit arrested on rape charges

 Playback singer Ankit Tiwari, who is best known for his songs in the hit film “Aashiqui 2”, was arrested on Thursday after his former girlfriend filed a rape and molestation case against him.

The singer, who shot to fame recently for the song “Sun raha hai na tu”, has been remanded in custody till May 12 in the Versova police station, where the case was registered.

Ankit’s lawyer Nagesh Mishra told media here: “Ankit was in relationship with the girl for a couple of years, but broke it off a year ago.”

Elaborating on the charges against the singer, Mishra said that Ankit was accused of rape and molestation under Sections 376 (rape), 417 (cheating) and 493 (cohabitation by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) of the Indian Penal Code.

Nidhi, who works at an advertising agency, is divorced and has a 12-year-old child. She also accused Ankit’s elder brother Ankur Tiwari of threatening her with dire consequences and harassment.
