Sonia rejects Gogoi's offer to resign

Last Updated 22 May 2014, 19:45 IST

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday offered to resign taking responsibility for the poor performance of the Congress in his state in the Lok Sabha elections, but party chief Sonia Gandhi is learnt to have rejected the move.

However Gogoi’s Maharashtra counterpart Prithviraj Chavan may not be as lucky.

Gogoi reportedly made the move during a meeting with Sonia Gandhi on Thursday evening during which he apprised her of the political situation in Assam.

PTI quoted Assam Agriculture Minister Nilomani Sen Deka as saying that Gandhi had rejected Gogoi’s offer to resign.

A senior leader said had the Congress accepted Gogoi’s offer to quit, it would have triggered similar demands from other party-ruled states such as Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
