JOIN USThe FIFA World Cup, which is one of the most-awaited sports events, is all set to take place next month in Brazil. Football fans will be seen grooving to samba and cheering for their favourite country.
The world is waiting with bated breath to see who will be crowned the World Cup Champions 2014.
And the same holds true for the youngsters in Bangalore, who are rooting for some of their favourite countries and stars hoping that they will perform on the world stage!
The fans in the City are already flaunting their favourite team’s jerseys. And the colours will only intensify as days goes by.
Metrolife speaks to a few fans, who have already chosen their player of the tournament with Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) being the choice of many.
But this could be an early call because in the tournaments held on a club level, many big names have been performing well and are in the right form.
So there could be great competition between players for the title which will only make the tournament all the more interesting for fans.
Brazil’s the best
H Anil Kumar, first-year engineering student, BNMIT, is excited about the venue. He says, “The World Cup is being held in Brazil and gives the world an opportunity to see the culture of Brazil and its love for football. This passion is unique to the country and its great that Brazil is the host nation. Last time, the World Cup was held in South Africa and a lot of crimes were committed in the country at that time. This time, I hope the authorities in Brazil are working on trying to make it a safe haven for tourists who are setting down from across the globe.”
Breaking the curse
Fazal Faisal, film-maker, is a big fan of The Netherlands.
“I’m supporting The Netherlands. They are my favourites. They are under the coaching of Lousi Van Gaal and have a star player, Wesley Sneijder. So they could just break the last time’s curse of being the runners-up and be crowned as the champions this time.”
Watch out for Germany!
Gaurav N, second-year BBM student, St Joseph’s College of Commerce is rooting for Germany.
“It will be the country to watch out for. After coming close last year, it will be all out to sweep the title this year. It’s a deadly squad which includes Mesut Ozil, Marco Reus and Toni Kroos.”
Mesmerised by Messi
Swaksha Krishna Kumar, second-year degree student, Mount Carmel College hopes Argentina wins the cup.
“One can’t count Lionel Messi out. He is simply awesome and already in the run to be the favourite player of the tournament. He has had a good season and I hope he helps Argentina win the cup. They are one of the favourites.”
Riveting Ronaldo
Aamina Jagirdar, second-year degree student, Mount Carmel College likes watching Cristiano Ronaldo in action.
“Cristiano Ronaldo will be the player to watch out for. He has already proved himself in the Champions League and can break into any defence that stands up. His stylish approach could be one of the highlights and he could be running home with this year’s ‘Best Player of the Tournament’. I hope he fulfills the dreams of his fans.”
