Novel gold smuggling bid in Chennai

In a novel attempt to get past customs with smuggled gold, a passenger from Malaysia arrived at the Anna International Airport here with 50 compact discs made of the precious metal.

Airport sources said that the passenger, Qasim (46), arrived from Kuala Lumpur on a Malaysian Airlines flight. He was carrying a brand new DVD player and 50 CDs wrapped in a plastic cover.

Suspicious officials conducted a thorough check on the unusual-looking CDs and found that all of them were gold plated. Each CD weighed about 10 grams, making the total weight of the gold around 500 grams.
