Shaji John, 45, a construction supervisor with Nalladi Engineering Constructions (NEC), was found dead inside a lift shaft at an under-construction building on the Mahaveer Jain Hospital premises in Vasanthnagar on Tuesday.

A resident of Kudlu, he hailed from Kerala and was staying with his wife and two daughters aged 12 and four years, the police said.

The hospital management had taken up the project as part of the extension of a block and awarded the work to NEC. Shaji was seen working on the third floor till late Monday evening. His family members contacted his office when he did not return even after late night.

The office boys began searching for him, and after an hour, found him lying dead in the shaft in the building’s basement, the police said.

The police rushed to the spot and took the body to Bowring Hospital.

Ruling out foul play, the police suspect that the death might have occurred after he accidentally fell down, as there were big gaps between each floor. The lift was yet to be installed, the police said, adding that a case of negligence was registered against the firm executing the project.
