In a bid to reduce traffic congestion in the City through better traffic management, the traffic police in the City have started installing tubular cones and humps.

Tubular cones have been installed at Bunts Hostel Circle, Nanthoor, PVS, Navabharath Circle, St Agnes at Bendoorwell. Similarly, rubber humps have been laid at Beasant School, Agnes College, Navabharath Circle, Empire Mall and other places.

ACP (Traffic) Uaday Nayak told Deccan Herald that there are allegations on vehicle owners not following traffic rules. However, there were no suitable marking system. The department has initaited measures to mark on the traffic system. Let us wait and see whether the traffic can be controlled after completion of the markings.”

Tubular cones have been installed on the road. It will not be damaged even if vehicles hit the cones.

The tubular cones have been laid at bus bays, so that the buses will move in the lane discipline and will help to ease traffic congestion when buses stop to allow the passengers to board the buses.

It will also help in checking the parking of vehicles haphazardly, said Traffic Police Inspector Gurudutt Kamath.

The Mangalore City Corporation will initiate measures to lay humps at 38 places. The humps laid by the MCC are more scientific and vehicle users have appreciated it.

However, there are allegations on not painting the humps.

MCC Superindenting Engineer Kantaraju said “the monsoon commenced when the work on humps were completed. Hence, the contractor stopped the process of painting the humps.

The humps have been designed as per the specifications given by Indian Road Congress (IRC).

The earlier rumble strips near educational institutions, accident-prone areas and approach roads to busy junctions are being replaced with the new ones. High quality of paint will be used for painting the humps, so that it will remain for long,” he said.

He said that the MCC will also develop a few bus stands and bus bays. New bus stand is being built near St Agnes College and Light House Hill. Interlock will also be laid on a few roads.

He said that tender will be invited for developing Jyothi Circle, Bunts Hostel Circle, PVS, Kankanady, Mallikatte and Nanthoor Circles. The work will commence after the monsoon.
