More than 30 elephants trooped into the fields shocking villagers who were guarding their crops in the night.
Efforts to save the crops turned futile as the jumbos ravaged paddy, sugarcane and plantain fields in Hebballi, Bochikatte, Tiger Block.
The herd did not return to the forests and camped at the Hebballa reservoir. On receiving the information, Forest and Revenue Department officials visited the spot on Sunday morning. Irate villagers took the officials to task for not controlling the jumbo menace. Later, the officials with the help of villagers managed to drive the herd into the Metikuppe forests.
