Elderly man killed with skewer

A 60-year-old man was stabbed to death with a barbeque grill skewer when he tried to interfere in a scuffle involving his neighbours in northeast Delhi’s Nand Nagri on Friday.

Police have arrested a 32-year-old woman, while her husband is absconding.The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Yameen, a resident of Sundar Nagri H-Block.

He lived with his wife Qureshi Begam and six children – five sons and a daughter. Yameen was also a members of the local RWA.

According to police, the incident took place at around 9 am. “Yameen had interfered when his 70-year-old neighbour was being thrashed by the neighbour’s son, daughter-in-law and a minor grandson,” said a police officer.   

The neighbour identified as Bashir Ahmed often indulged in heated arguments over a property dispute with his 37-year-old son Noor Ahmed and daughter-in-law Shabeena.
He was often abused and thrashed by the couple and their son.

On Friday morning, the family members again had an argument which soon led to a scuffle. Upon hearing the commotion, neighbours gathered outside Bashir’s house. Being a member of the RWA, Yameen tried to help Bashir.

Yameen spoke to Noor Ahmed and Shabeena, and tried to settle the dispute amicably. However, the couple attacked Yameen and fled from the spot. Locals then made a call to the police control room on which a team of local police arrived at the spot.

They rushed Yameen to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.A case of murder has been filed with Nand Nagri police station. The investigating officers have arrested Shabeena, but Noor Ahmed is absconding.

Locals allege that Bashir had filed numerous complaints against his son and daughter-in-law, but police had never initiated action.

Yameen’s body was handed over to family late on Friday afternoon. His daughter Abida said he was a social worker and being a RWA member, locals used to visit their house to seek his guidance on numerous issues.
