Spurned by a widow, a 55-year-old man allegedly attacked her with acid following a scuffle between them in outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri on Sunday. The 40-year-old woman, however, escaped with few burns and has been discharged from hospital.

The accused, an unemployed man, was arrested late in the night after he gave police the slip in the day.

Gopal told police during interrogation that he was angry at victim Raman’s indifferent attitude towards him of late. He claimed that when Raman’s husband died a few years ago, he stepped in to bring her out of her debt.

“Gopal says he was in a relationship with Raman after her husband’s death. He claims she had begun seeing someone else for the last few weeks over which he often quarreled with her,” a police officer said.

Being neighbours in Sultanpuri’s block D, it was yet another quarrel on Sunday evening but it soon turned into a scuffle. Gopal then allegedly entered his home and brought out a can containing acid which he hurled at Raman, a homemaker.

She managed to duck in the nick of time to escape serious burns. However, some of the liquid spilled over her arms and neck.

Other neighbours informed police and she was taken to a hospital where she was treated for the burns and discharged.

Arrested
Police raided Gopal’s home but he had managed to escape. However, he was caught from his hideout in the same area that night and sent behind bars, police said.
