Govt keen on splitting BU

Last Updated 10 December 2014, 19:39 IST

The government favours establishing a new university in Kolar and bringing under it a cluster of colleges now affiliated to Bangalore University (BU), Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande has said.

Replying to Ramesh Kumar (Congress) in the Assembly on Wednesday, he said Kolar already had a BU postgraduation centre and land was available on the campus for a varsity.

A committee headed by Prof N R Shetty had recommended splitting of the university—one centralised varsity with four affiliated universities. The recommendation has been forwarded to the Law department for consideration after which the Cabinet would discuss it. The government is seriously considering splitting BU.

It had sent a draft bill to the former governor seeking his assent for smaller varsities. “The DVG University was proposed on the Central College campus. For some reason, he didn’t approve the proposal,” he said.
