Man fakes robbery, 2 caught

A sales manager went to the extent of having himself stabbed to fake a robbery of Rs 5 lakh belonging to a private firm for whom he was working. However, several loopholes in the plan led police to expose him within six hours of the complaint being filed.

Police said on Friday the stab wound on accused Lakshya Sharma’s hand itself appeared superficial. It was later found to have been inflicted by his friend as per the plan they had hatched.

Further, he had neither made a call to the police control room, nor informed some traffic policemen checking vehicles only 20 metres away from the alleged crime spot.

Police visited the spot only to learn that they had witnessed no robbery. They were also suspicious about the allegations as Sharma was not wearing a sweater or jacket in the cold.

“The man broke down under sustained interrogation and said there was no robbery. He was leading a luxurious lifestyle and he needed the money to maintain it,” said Pushpendra Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West).

Sharma also needed to replenish about Rs 2 lakh to the private firm he was working for as he had spent the company’s money on himself. He also wanted to buy a car for which he planned this operation with his friend Devender Chauhan who has also been arrested, police said.

Sharma used to collect cash from different clients of his company. On Wednesday, he collected Rs 2.5 lakh from Gulshan Gupta in west Delhi’s Lajwanti Garden and Rs 2.2 lakh from Gupta’s brother. He then borrowed his friend’s Tata Safari and headed to the Karkardooma-based firm.

As per his complaint, two motorcycle-borne men at Lajwanti Garden near Mayapuri robbed him of the cash at knifepoint. When he resisted, they stabbed him in his hand.
