Drunk men molest, assault couples at Kamla Nehru Park

Last Updated 08 January 2015, 02:54 IST

Couples visiting Kamla Nehru Park in north Delhi were allegedly molested by a group of five men in inebriated condition, including three teenagers, on Sunday.

All of them were nabbed after a PCR call was made and staff of four PCR vans surrounded the park.

A case has been filed over a couple’s complaint with Maurice Nagar police station, police said on Wednesday.

The accused have been identified as Ankit, 19, Nishant, 21, Rohit Kumar, 24, Rahul, 19, and Prashant, 22, residents of Ganga Vihar and Bhajanpura in north-east Delhi.
Police said they were held after a call was made to the PCR on Sunday.

“The caller claimed that a group of men was misbehaving with couples in the park,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma told Deccan Herald.
Four PCR vans in the area responded to the call and reached the park within five minutes. But the accused tried to flee before police met the PCR caller.

The police teams were told that the men were in an inebriated state and hiding in the bushes inside the park. The PCR staff immediately surrounded the park and informed local police for a backup.

“The staff of PCR vans S-58, T-51, S-17 and S-14 searched and chased the culprits inside the park and apprehended all the five culprits,” another officer said.

The police teams then met the caller, who was identified as a 22-year-old woman. She is a student of Delhi University’s School of Open Learning.

On Sunday, she was sitting on a bench in the park with a male friend when the five men came towards them.

“The woman alleged that the group of men passed lewd comments and misbehaved when she objected. They molested her and left only when some people in the park began to gather there,” Verma said.

She made a call to the PCR as soon as they left. When questioned, other couples at the park told police that the gang had also misbehaved with them.

The woman and the arrested men were taken to Maurice Nagar police station, where her statement was recorded.

She claimed that she would have been gang-raped by them if people had not gathered there.

The medical examination of the accused has confirmed that they had consumed alcohol, and police have also recovered empty bottles of beer consumed by them at the park.

A case under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered with Maurice Nagar police station.
