For only one person figures among the 53 who have been conferred the Jeevan Raksha Padak (JRP) Awards by the President of India on Friday.
Ruksana Banu is the sole individual from Karnataka who has been presented the civilian gallantry award, compared to Maharashtra’s 14 brave souls and as many as 13 from Kerala. Banu has been awarded the JRP for “courage and promptitude in saving life under circumstances of grave bodily injury to the rescuer”.
The award carries a one-time monetary award of Rs 30,000.
The award is given for a meritorious act of saving the life of a person in cases like, drowning, accidents, fire incidents, electrocution and natural calamities. Even small States like in Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Meghalaya has two people on the award list.
Nominations for these awards are invited from all State Governments and various ministries and departments of Government of India. The recommendations are considered by the JRP Awards Committee.
