An Afghanistani man stabbed his girlfriend to death with a kitchen knife at her flat in south Delhi’s Kalkaji during the wee hours of Saturday.

The accused was nabbed while fleeing from the house by two policemen who were on election duty.

The woman, identified as 35-year-old Maya, was a native of Uzbekistan and worked at a call centre in the city.

The accused Mohammad Raza, 30, was her colleague and lives in Ashram area of the city.
Raza was a frequent visitor to her accommodation in Kalkaji’s J-Block that was rented by her only two months ago.

Police said that Raza had come to meet her on Friday night and they drank together.
The couple’s drunken conversation soon turned into a heated argument over a personal issue, in the midst of which Raza brought a kitchen from the knife and threatened to stab her.

The woman did not show any fear despite being threatened with a knife which further enraged Raza as he went on to stab her half-a-dozen times in her chest.

“The woman’s screams had drawn the attention of some policemen posted outside a polling booth 100 metres from the house. Two policemen made a dash for Raza and nabbed him while he was attempting an escape,” said police.

The policemen then went inside the house to find the woman lying on the floor with stab wounds.

The policemen called the police control room (PCR) number after which a team arrived at the crime scene to collect evidence.

Maya was then rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre where she was declared brought dead.
The Uzbekistan Embassy has been informed of the alleged murder and they are in the process of getting in touch with her family.

The post-mortem is likely to be conducted on Monday. A murder case has been registered against Raza at Kalkaji police station.
