The bodies of a young married couple were found inside a flat in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar on Wednesday evening. Prima facie it appears that the man strangled his wife before committing suicide, police said.

While the woman was found dead on the floor of their house, the 25-year-old man was hanging from the ceiling when police broke open the door. Sanjay’s wrists were found slit. No external injuries were found on 22-year-old Sugandhi’s body.

Police said it was too early to establish the cause of their deaths. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. The couple’s families have been informed and they are likely to reach Delhi on Thursday.

The couple’s friends and relatives will be questioned on whether they were sharing a strained relationship, police said. The couple lived in a rented accommodation on the top floor of a building in Ajit Nagar and worked as tailors in the locality.

They were natives of Seetamarhi in Bihar, and got married in January last year. Since they were married for less than seven years, the case will be investigated by a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), police said.

The police control room received a call about the incident from the victims’ neighbour at 6 pm on Wednesday. “A person known to the couple tried to reach Sanjay through phone. When the calls were not received or returned, the person called up Sanjay’s neighbour and asked him to check,” police said.

The neighbour knocked repeatedly at the door, but received no response. He then checked through a crack in the window and saw the bodies inside.

A police team arrived at the crime scene and broke into the house. The couple was rushed to a hospital where both were declared brought dead. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and a case registered with Gandhi Nagar police station.
