Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh is still backing the scrapped four-year undergraduate programme. He said the programme is still feasible if implemented with sincerity.

The University Grants Commission at the start of the 2014 academic session had ordered DU to migrate to the old system, putting an end a stand-off between the VC and Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA).

On the sidelines of the DU annual cultural festival ‘Antardhvani’ on Saturday, Singh said the FYUP, introduced for the first time in 2013, needs sincerity and adequate time for implementation.
“We are in no confrontation or enmity with anyone. It about method of learning or enabling students to learn,” he said.

The VC said that the best way of learning is peer learning. “Why do we always need a blackboard? It kills the world. What did Ravindranath Tagore said, 100 years ago, that systems of learning have been killed in the classrooms and the four walls, is still relevant. We must move out in the real world.”

“The one who looks at the larger picture is the one who can help bring change. I have spoken to several students on what was their best way of learning, and it was majorly peer learning,” he added.

On innovation in teaching and learning, he said the university’s colleges are presenting their best innovations in the three-day DU cultural festival to meet the challenges of today.

“The only purpose of education is to help you (students) find a right direction toward your calling in life. Education should enable them to do so and we should try to provide such an environment for it. It is our duty to provide them with the facility that will help them realise their dream,” he said.
