The HSR Layout police on Sunday arrested a 24-year-old labourer in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old woman.

Police gave the name of the arrested as Anjrul Haq, a native of Shyamnagar village, Murshidabad in West Bengal. He used to live in a makeshift shed set up by the Confident Group at Hodosiddapura, said the police. The victim has been identified as Vandana.

According to police, Haq and Vandana were in a relationship for the last few months. Haq had promised to marry her, but went back on his word, which angered Vandana. She had threatened to lodge a complaint against him if he did not marry her, the police said.

To avoid marrying her, Haq plotted Vandana’s murder. He took her to a bathroom near Nilgiri grove past midnight on February 26 and hit her head with a sharp weapon. He dragged her inside the bathroom and stabbed her repeatedly. Haq then poured kerosene and burnt the body, the police said.
