Sena renews fight against Jaitapur plant

Last Updated 19 March 2015, 20:16 IST

Targeting the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena on Thursday renewed protests against the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP).

MPs, MLAs and leaders of Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena marched towards the office of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), but they were stopped by the police. Shiv Sena MP from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg Vinayak Raut said his party was not opposed to nuclear power but is against the plant being located in Jaitapur.

“The project can be shifted to Gujarat,” he said, adding that the Shiv Sena would not allow the plant to come up in the Konkan belt.

Rajapur MLA Rajan Salvi and Ratnagiri MLA Uday Samant too were part of the protests.
“The project is against the interests of people of Konkan region,” said Samant. “The police may have prevented us, but our message has gone,” added Salvi.
