In what could be a huge embarrassment to the Nitish Kumar government, Bihar Education Minister P K Sahi admitted on Thursday that it was not possible to check copying in the on-going matriculation exams.

“There are around 1,100 centres in Bihar where nearly 14 lakh students are appearing for the matriculation examination. Its humanly not possible to ensure that copying is stopped within the examination halls. More so, when thousands of guardians and other family members of the examinees are jostling with each other to pass on the chits/answer-books through terrace, roofs, windows,” said Sahi.

“It’s actually a grave social problem where the guardians will have to come forward to make the examination free and fair,” the minister added.

When a local journalist pointed out that the minister could at least ask the district administration to tighten the screw on the offenders, he shot back:  “Do you want me to order firing on our own people ? A social problem has to be solved in a responsible way.”
