A 16-year-old girl was killed after a car allegedly driven by her underage friend crashed into a tree in south Delhi’s Vasant Vihar on Thursday night.

The boy, also aged 16, is admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre with serious injuries.
Police said he had sneaked out with his family’s Maruti Zen car without informing his parents.

The girl too had sneaked out of her home to join him as they went on a drive.
However, the exact sequence of events leading to the accident is yet to be established. No alcohol was found in their blood. The accident took place at 12.25 am in Vasant Vihar’s block C.

Eyewitness Sugandh said the car was travelling at a speed in excess of 100 km/hr.
Police said they have little reason to suspect this claim given the extent of damage to the car that was registered in the boy’s father’s name.

The impact of the crash was such that glass shreds from the car spilled over onto the first floor of a house located close to the accident site.

The left side of the car was badly damaged as a result.

“The car had climbed over the pavement to crash into the tree. Police were informed by a private security guard employed at a nearby house,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where the girl was declared brought dead.

She had suffered injuries to her head and limbs. The boy too sustained head injured.
A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered against the boy with Vasant Vihar police station.

Police are probing if the boy rode away his father’s car on earlier occasions too.
Residents of the same locality in Air India Colony, the parents of the girl and boy have been family friends for long.

“The girl’s father works in the loading branch of Air India and the boy’s father is with the engineering department,” the officer said.
