Deputy Commissioner Ajay Nagabushan’s surprise visit to the anganwadi centre at ward number 15, in Nagamangala, Mandya district, exposed its functioning amid unhygienic surroundings.

The DC, who was in Nagamangala on Wednesday, to inspect development and road works taken up at a cost of Rs 1 crore under the special grant, observed a few children playing in a field en route, and made a surprise visit to the anganwadi centre nearby.

He found that the anganwadi worker was absent and the assistant cook had to take care of 28 children and also attend to the needs of 14 pregnant women. When Ajay Nagabushan sought the attendance register for checking, the assistant cook informed that the ‘Madam’ has taken it with her, which irked him.

He inspected the quality of the nutritious food being distributed to pregnant women. He also took to task the officer, Manjunath, who was accompanying him for the poor maintenance of the surroundings, which was stinking. The DC directed the official to report to the CDPO about the absence of the anganwadi worker and get the details.

Manjunath explained that it was difficult to maintain the surroundings due to lack of sweepers. The tenders related to it has been cancelled due to technical problems and about 15 workers have been appointed on a temporary basis, he said. He appealed to the DC to make provisions for re-inviting the tenders.

The DC inspected works being taken up near TAPCMS, Hirikere, behind Junior College and the road that connects Mayannagowdanakoppalu.
