Bollywood director's Facebook post on being hit and run survivor goes viral

Last Updated 09 May 2015, 05:34 IST

In light of the recent five year sentence handed out to Salman Khan in the 2002 hit and run case, Bollywood writer-director Charudutt Acharya, took to Facebook last night to share his own account of surviving a hit and run accident.

The post has gone viral with over 14,000 shares since it was posted on Facebook. In the post Acharya talks about the cowardly act of running away from the scene of the crime.

Recalling the incident which happened  in 1998, Acharya wrote ''Not too far from American Bakery (where the Salman Khan thing happened), a young woman from Pali Hill (incidentally daughter of a film industry bigwig) rammed her car full speed into the auto that I was travelling. The auto turned turtle. My left leg was an unrecognizable mess. The auto driver, miraculously scratch-less, extricated me from the auto. The young lady and her friend, who had got out of the car, saw the mess, sat back in the car and took off.''

He also talks about the kindness of a stranger who took him to hospital, and how he didn't have insurance and had to make do with basic compensation and how he still can't walk straight.

He also wrote about how the woman who had caused the accident was later identified and even came to visit him, but was never convicted of it. ''She said she fled because she feared the people on the streets will do something nasty to her. I asked her why she did not go to the cops and tell them this is what happened. She just said nothing not looking me in the eye. I asked her the question again and she just continued to be silent. She gave me a bouquet of flowers, cried a bit and left.''

He also had harsh words for the industry which has been falling head over heels to defend  a cowardly act. "A spineless film industry running to absurdly defend the star who subsidises their Rs. 100-crore clubs," he wrote.

Acharya is known for directing Sonali Cable and writing the script of Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu starrer Dum Maaro Dum.
