Metro to set up elevated depot facilities

Last Updated 11 May 2015, 02:25 IST

Two of Delhi Metro’s upcoming depots under its phase 3 project will have many of their components constructed on elevated decks for better space management. The construction for both depots has been started, said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Sunday.

“For both the upcoming Vinod Nagar and Kalindi Kunj depots, the space was limited and inadequate. Therefore, a decision was taken to construct their vital components on elevated decks for better utilisation of the space,” Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said. A Metro train depot generally requires approximately 2.5 lakh square metres space for the setting up of stabling lines, inspection bays, workshops and washing plants. A depot at Kalindi Kunj for Janakpuri West - Botanical Garden corridor is being constructed on an elevated deck about 13 to 14 metres from the ground at Jasola Vihar. It will have 1.3 kilometre long and 30-40 metre wide deck for stabling lines.“An auto-washing plant for cleaning the trains will also be set up on an elevated deck for effective space management,” an official said.

This facility will accommodate 27 trains and the inspection bay will hold six to eight trains at a time, he added.

“Another elevated deck for stabling additional trains is also being planned,” he said. The depot at Vinod Nagar for the Majlish Park-Shiv Vihar corridor has a drain and road in between the allotted area and the site is fragmented into two parts. “One end of it is at the ground level and can accommodate 11 stabling lines. The other side comprises a double deck structure to cater to 20 stabling lines. Of these nine lines will be at ground level and 11 lines will be on the deck,” he said. Both depots will have depot control centres, effluent treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, inspection bays, workshops and auto-train washing units.

Delhi Metro is constructing six new depots at Kalindi Kunj, Mukundpur, Vinod Nagar Badli, Ghaziabad and Faridabad under its phase 3 project.

At present, the DMRC has eight depots for its existing corridors at Shastri Park, Khyber Pass, Najafgarh (Phase 1), Yamuna Bank, Mundka, Sarita Vihar, Sultanpur and Dwarka Sector 21 (Phase 2).
