Updating - Tremors sweep large parts of India

A large chunk of India, especially in the eastern and northern regions was hit by earthquake on Tuesday.  

The epicentre was 68 km from Namche Bazar, northeast of Kathmandu, an area close to Mount Everest. The earthquake, which measured 7.4 on the Richter scale, made its impact on  several state of India including Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and even tamil Nadu.

Rajasthan
Tremors were felt in most areas of Rajasthan on Tuesday, causing people to rush out of their houses and offices in panic.

However, so far there are no reports of any loss of life or damage to property in the state.
The earthquake was felt most by the people living in high-rise buildings. Small cracks were seen to have developed in some buildings.

"Oh...this time I felt that it lasted longer than the one that we had in April. We all rushed out of our houses," said Rakesh Sharma, who lives on the fifth floor in a high-rise building in C-Scheme area of Jaipur.

"I was sitting on my chair working on a computer. Suddenly my chair started to shake. As soon as I realised it was an earthquake, I rushed out of my office," said Puja Tiwari, an executive working with a private company here.

The desert town of Barmer also felt the shocks, which, however, were mild.

"I did feel things around me shaking, but only for a few seconds," said Vikram Singh, a resident of the border district of Barmer.

People were seen worried and concerned as they started to call up their relatives and friends to enquire about their safety.

"The first thing after I realised that it was an earthquake, I called up my parents and enquired about their safety," said Saurabh Kumar, a manager in a hotel.

Odisha
Tremors were felt in most parts of Odisha today triggering panic among the people who rushed out of the buildings.

The epicentre of the earthquake was about 815 km North of Bhubaneswar.

Apart from the state capital Bhubaneswar, tremors were felt in Cuttack, Balasore, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Khurda, Rourkela, Ganjam, Baripada, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Nabarangpur and several other places.

Bihar
An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale was felt in Patna and other parts of Bihar this afternoon.

Initial reports suggest that tremors were felt across several parts of the state including Darbhanga, East Champaran and Kisanganj. The earthquake send people into panic.
In the capital city Patna, citizens were seen running out from buildings into open spaces.
In many schools, children ran to safety in field.

West Bengal
Parts of West Bengal were today rocked by an earthquake, that had its epicentre in Nepal, causing panic among the people.

Hundreds of people ran out of their homes, offices, metro stations and high rise buildings, and assembled on the streets. The tremors were felt in various parts of the city especially in Lake Town, Salt Lake, Dalhouise and Park street area.

Jharkhand
Tremors were felt in several places in Jharkhand today but no loss of life or property damage was reported.

Tremors were felt in Ranchi, Dumka, Giridih and in other places around 12.35 PM for a few seconds, an official said.

There was no report of any damage to life or property.

Tamil Nadu
Mild tremors were felt in some parts of the city here today as the fallout of a powerful earthquake epicentred in Nepal, officials said.

Tremors were felt in Valasaravakkam, Santhome and parts of Kodambakkam, they said.
The Seismology Unit of the Regional Meterological Centre here said the tremors were felt as a result of the 7.1 magnitude quake epicentred in Nepal.

Residents and office-goers fled buildings in the localities to safer zone. There were no reports of any damage to life or property, police said.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale epicentred in Nepal shook West Bengal, Delhi and several parts of north India today.

Madhya Pradesh
Tremors of two near-simultaneous powerful earthquakes that shook several states in North and East India, with their epicentres in Nepal and Afghanistan, were felt across Madhya Pradesh this afternoon, officials said.

"The tremors of the two quakes were experienced in entire Madhya Pradesh at 12.35 pm and 1.06 pm respectively," Dr Anupam Kashyapi, Director of the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) told PTI.

However, no casualty was reported from any part of the state, he said.

According to the IMD, the quake measuring 7.3 on Richter scale struck at 12.35 pm today, some 70 kilometres east of Kathmandu at a depth of 18.5 kilometres. The Union Home Ministry said there was also a near simultaneous earthquake epicentred in Afghanistan which measured 6.9 on Richter scale.

"We have asked people living in the kaccha earthen houses to stay out of their houses in Rewa and Sagar divisions of the state," Kashyapi added.

According to officials, the panic-stricken people in Bhopal ran out of their offices, including the state Secretariat, malls and buildings following tremors.

He said that the first tremors lasted for 95 seconds, while the following ones lasted for around 40 seconds.

The April 25 earthquake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter Scale, had claimed over 8,000 lives in Nepal. Nearly 80 people were also killed in India, mostly in Bihar, due to the temblor.
