Thieves broke into a businessman’s house in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar and made away with about Rs 30 lakh in cash. Much of the money was meant to be spent on the wedding of the businessman’s daughter.

The victim and his family continued to sleep soundly while the thieves entered the house and made away with the cash.

The theft was discovered only around 8.30 am on Thursday when the businessman noticed that the door mesh had been torn.

The victim claimed that of the Rs 29.9 was lakh stolen, and over Rs 20 lakh were borrowed from a friend for his daughter’s wedding. A case has been registered with Hari Nagar police station. No arrest has been made yet.

Mahendra Guglani owns his own business in Tilak Nagar and lives with his family in Hari Nagar. He had kept all the cash in an almirah in his son’s room on the first floor.

Guglani and his family slept on the ground floor on the night of the theft.
“I was going to the balcony on the first floor to dry clothes when I noticed the door mesh had been torn into and the door unbolted from inside. I checked my son’s room to find the room ransacked and his almirah open,” Guglani told police.

Upon finding all the cash stolen, he informed police. A crime team arrived at the site and collected fingerprints.

While the victim has not named any suspect, police are questioning some household helps employed by him.

Police said they are certain of an insider’s involvement in the theft as only someone closely following the family’s activities would know when and how much cash was being brought into the house and where it was being kept.
