Sanitation workers with the North and East Corporations have decided to stage a demonstration against city government demanding salaries.

The safai karamchari unions also demanded that the women sanitation workers to be exempted from working on main roads.

Federation of sanitation workers of North Delhi Municipal Corporation under the leadership of Sanjay Gahlot met North Delhi Mayor Ravinder Gupta and demanded that their salaries be paid on time.

The mayor told the members of the federation that despite meeting the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor, no heed has been given to the civic agency’s demand of its legitimate share to the tune of approximately Rs 2,000 crore owed by the city government.

Gupta added that it is due to the “irresponsible and careless attitude of the Delhi government that sanitation workers and other employees of the corporation are suffering”.

Representatives of sanitation workers’ union decided to gherao the Chief Minister if the funds are not released to the corporation at the earliest.

The North Delhi Mayor accepted to the demand of safai karamchari and directed officials not to deploy women sanitation workers on main roads.

“They should be assigned duties only on inner roads, markets and colonies so that they don’t face harassment,” said Gupta.

The sanitation workers with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation have threatened to go on strike on Friday if their demands are not met.

They are demanding payment of salaries on time, regular posts and better work environment.

Contractual teachers
A delegation of contractual teachers of North Corporation also met North Delhi Mayor and demanded payment of the salaries due for two months.

It also demanded regular posts for those teachers working with the civic agency for the past 14 years.

The mayor assured the delegation that salaries will be paid as and when the civic agency gets funds from the city government. The North Corporation is in the red and it requires Rs 171 crore to pay salaries and other benefits to its over 70,000 employees.

Even the East Delhi Municipal Corporation requires over Rs 100 crore to pay salaries and other benefits to its over 32,000 employees.
