'Act against unauthorised schools'

Last Updated 27 May 2015, 18:32 IST

Members of Karnataka Vidyarthigala Poshakara Jagruti Vedike staged a protest on Wednesday, condemning State government’s delay in initiating action against the unauthorised schools in the state.

The members also demanded resignation of Kimmane Rathnakar, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Vedike president, Ravi said they want government to shut down such schools. “If they cannot do that, at least a notice in front of such schools should be put up informing that the school is unauthorised so that parents will not think of enrolling their children at such institutions. What if the government takes action against them in the middle of the academic year? What would happen to the children who are already enrolled at the school” he questioned.

A five-member district level regulatory authority exists to monitor donations received by schools. But till date there have been no updates about the committee, Ravi stated. Members of the association later submitted a memorandum to Kimmane Rathnakar, seeking immediate action in this regard.

The government's apathy towards the issue has raised criticism from several quarters. A few months ago initiative was taken  to identify unauthorised schools. However no action was taken against them.
