St Philomena’s College was established in the year 1946 with philanthropic ideals of democratising and de-elitising education. Taking its origin in the grand gestures of the visionary zeal of the Bishop and the generosity of the erstwhile Maharaja, it has marched forward, never losing this essential core of confluences that build its foundations. The institution has a diverse demography with students from 19 states and 29 nations.

The college has achieved many milestones in its almost seven-decade pursuit. It was awarded A+ by NAAC in 2004 and re-accredited with A grade with 3.58 CGPA-Very Good in 2014. So, the University Grants Commission has conferred the status of ‘College of Excellence’ (CE). At present only 14 colleges in India and three colleges in Karnataka are conferred with this status. The college became Autonomous in 2011 and is looking at a leap of becoming a Degree Awarding Institution.

The college offers undergraduate courses in Science, Arts, Commerce, Management, Social Work, Computer Applications, Tourism and Hospitality Management with a wide variety of subjects and combinations. There are eight postgraduate courses. It has excellent infrastructure with sufficient number of large, well-ventilated classrooms, equipped with ICT facility. It has a spacious digital library, comprising more than 40,000 documents and nearly 300 CD/DVD collections.

The students have facilities like hostel for men and women, indoor stadium, open air theatre, well equipped laboratories, gymnasium, placement cell, insurance, scholarships, workshops, field trips, etc.

The college has a unique scheme ‘Earn while you learn’ with morning and evening classes, helping students secure part-time jobs. There is separate Kannada medium for BA, BCom and BBM courses. In addition to diploma and add-on courses, Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is followed, which provides students an opportunity to opt for open elective papers like Photography, Fashion Designing, etc.
