A woman MBA graduate in Uttar Pradesh who turned to car thieving made a success out of her venture by stealing 1,000 vehicles in two years.

Shweta Gupta, arrested with four of her gang members on Sunday in Allahabad, was so efficient in her operations that the police had to announce a reward of Rs 10,000 for information. Four luxury cars were also recovered from her possession during the arrest.

The Allahabad police said Shweta, an MBA graduate, worked in a few car showrooms in the town before resorting to car thieving to make quick money. They also pointed out that Shweta had an extensive national network.

“Her gang members used to steal cars from NCR, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Uttarakhand,” Allahabad district police chief V P Srivastava said.

The gang would then sell stolen cars to workshop owners in UP and other states. “Shweta used to spend her time in the hills of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to evade the cops,” the police chief said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team nabbed Shweta and four of her gang members at Transport Nagar area of Allahabad.

They are also on the lookout for car workshop owners who snapped up stolen cars at throwaway prices from Shweta’s gang.
