2 sand boas rescued, 7 held

The Central Crime Branch police arrested seven men and seized two sand boas (snakes), besides recovering nine mobile phones and a car from them.

The suspects have been identified as Ameen, Nawaz, Akram, Tahir, Ismail, Sadique and Arif. They had captured the sand boas from a forest area in Gauribidnur in Kolar district with the help of snake charmers by paying them Rs 10 lakh, said the police.

They wanted to sell the snakes to customers outside India, as the reptiles are in great demand abroad. They are bought for higher prices as people in a some countries believe sand boas bring them good fortune. Each sand boa could fetch anywhere between Rs 2 crore and Rs 5 crore in China and Hong Kong, added the police.
