Labelling of appliances using water like washing machines, property tax waiver for green structures with efficient water usage are some of the things the newly proposed Bureau for Water Efficiency (BWE) would undertake.

The ministry of Water Resources is working to set up the BWE on the lines of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power to spread awareness on water conservation and efficient use.

The Water Resources Ministry has prepared a cabinet note and has circulated it among ministers to seek their views, an official from the ministry told Deccan Herald.
The ministry had earlier held extensive discussions with stakeholders like the industries, state governments, departments and NGOs, all of whom had supported the proposals.

According to the proposals, the BWE would label electronic appliances that consume less water and would also develop water conservation building codes and consumption norms.
