According to Hesiod, the goddess of the night — Nyx — was born from Chaos. She is known for her beauty and elusiveness. A shadowy figure even in Greek mythology, she is feared by even the likes of Zeus. So it seems only fitting that a death metal band, who loves its share of darkness, be named after her.

.
The two-piece band, which comprises Supreeth on drums and Sonaksh on guitar and vocals, has been active for the past year. They are currently in search of a bassist and Sameer Rao, a student of PESIT, is the front runner for the race. Says Supreeth, also a student, “I used to be in a five-piece band called ‘Forbidden Sin’. But when the vocalist left for Dubai we had to find a replacement. That’s when Sonaksh came into the picture.” Sonaksh adds that he started jamming with Supreeth when he was with the old band and was their sessions player every now and then.

But the beats didn’t quite work out and the members of ‘Forbidden Sin’ went their own way. “This was the time when Supreeth and I came up with a song called ‘Thandava’, about Shiva. It was really good so we decided to stick on and try more sounds,” says Sonaksh. He used to work with a band called ‘Eternal Assault’ before this and played for sessions with many others. “It was easy, getting along with Supreeth. We both are metalheads and we instantly hit it off. Once we started jamming together, the band just followed naturally.”

Initially they were called ‘Chartreuze Souls’ but later Sonaksh changed it to ‘NyX’. “The first name was just a temporary one and ‘NyX’ made more sense as she is the Greek goddess of the night,” says Sonaksh. Supreeth adds, “Also, most people couldn’t pronounce ‘Chartreuze Souls’ and didn’t understand the name.”
Although they are a death metal band, they dabble with black metal. Melodious guitar riffs mixed with hard-hitting beats are what they are known for. The lyrics are mainly about war and battles and crimes in the name of god. “Some lyrics are anti-god,” adds Sonaksh. Some of their songs are ‘Fight of the Fallen’, ‘Battle to be Won’ and ‘The Burning of the Supreme Lord’.

They are all-set to release their first album by next year. “My dad’s friend has offered to record us,” says Supreeth. Does that mean his parents approve of his love for metal? “Yes. At first my parents were a bit apprehensive and asked me not to pursue this path. But when they saw how interested I was in music, they were supportive,” says Supreeth.
Both of them say, in unison, that metal gives them a sense of freedom that is hard to find in other genres. “Metal gives you a chance to use your instruments and vocals to their fullest. These days, music is becoming very electronic, but metal remains pure,” says the drummer. Sonaksh adds that it lets him express himself to the fullest and best. “I feel like myself.”
