Homely meals

Literally translating to ‘simply one hutshop’, ‘Veruthe Oru Thattukada’ is home for every food lover. With a laid-back 1960s set-up with various movie posters and chalk writings on the wall, this ‘kudilu’ (hut) accommodates about five benches where a maximum of six people can sit. Retro songs play in the background and anyone walking in will learn the ways of this restaurant.

Claiming to be foodies, Azif Bashir and his business partner, Subin Thomas, decided to bring flavourful Kerala cuisine to the City. With their hotel management experience, they joined forces to start this restaurant a year ago. “The highlight of the restaurant is definitely our chef Sudharshan Sahu, who is from Orissa but prepares excellent Kerala food. With his culinary skills, people bustle in to taste the authentic meals and have a great time,” adds Azif.

Located opposite DLG New Town on Bannerghatta Road, many from near and far make it to this restaurant just to devour the delicious food. Ganesh Nayak, a resident of JP Nagar says, “I heard about this place from my friends and I just had to check it out. I loved everything about it– the vintage, retro styled-ambience as well as the food served on a banana leaf. I think I tried just about everything that’s there on the menu! The Mangalurean in me was delighted when I finished my meal.”

For a few, reminiscing their native food is comforting. Don Mathew says, “I absolutely love the food served here. It was wonderful to discover this place and I felt like I was back home having my mother’s food. Their beef fry, duck roast and fish items, especially the squid, are to die for. I can’t wait to visit this place again this weekend.”

Many passers-by stop for lunch and dinner here. A traditional meal usually consists of rice, varieties of curries, ‘thoren’ (stir-fries), ‘papadam’ and pickle. For those who want to add more, a fish and/or beef fry completes the meal. “‘Karimeen pollichathu’ is one of the popular dishes that people really enjoy. It’s a pearl spot fish marinated in spices, wrapped in banana leaf and grilled till it’s done. There’s great demand for this along with the duck roast and quail that we offer during weekends,” says Azif.

Breakfast items like ‘appam’, ‘chiratta puttu’, ‘kadala curry’ and ‘egg roast’ are also much sought after here. Shilpa Joel says, “We’re happy that we live near the restaurant.

My husband loves the meals and chicken roast here. I love the beef roast, fish curry and crab masala. Thanks to their home delivery option, we order in when we feel lazy to go out.”

‘Veruthe Oru Thattukada’ is known for the simplicity it keeps and the brilliant food it serves. When one misses home and wants to enjoy the old-school treatment, this is the ‘adda’ to walk in to.

The eatery is located on the 1st Floor, opposite DLF New Town, Akshayanagar, Hulimavu, Bannerghatta Road or call 9986664242 for reservations.
