Three autorickshaw drivers have been arrested for murdering a criminal in north-east Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar last week.

Saleem was stabbed to death for slapping and snatching Rs 200 from one of the accused. A probe has revealed that Saleem used extort money from autorickshaw drivers at north-east Delhi’s Loni, police said on Wednesday.

On June 22, a call was made to the police control room reporting that a man was lying injured and unconscious on Loni Road. “We found that the victim had been stabbed in his neck. He was already dead when our team reached there,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Veenu Bansal.

Once the deceased was identified as Saleem, police realised that he was a notorious criminal of north-east district and had 20 criminal cases against him registered with various police stations in the city. He was also a drug addict and used to extort money from autorickshaw drivers to purchase drugs.

During investigation, several autorickshaw drivers and nearby shopkeepers were interrogated to establish the identity of Saleem.
Local intelligence then led police to three autorickshaw drivers Deepak, 22, Bunty, 20, and Armaan, 20.

On interrogation, it was revealed that Saleem had slapped Deepak and threatened him with dire consequences at gunpoint. Before leaving, Saleem had taken Rs 200 from Deepak’s pocket.

“To avenge the insult, the accused planned to kill Saleem and subsequently murdered him late on June 21,” Bansal added.

Saleem was stabbed by Deepak, while Bunty and Armaan kept a watch on passers-by. The knife has been recovered at the instance of Deepak. They were produced in Karkardooma Court, and sent to judicial custody till July 10.
