India will host a summit of G-4 leaders in New York this year to discuss UN Security Council reforms, announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.

The Group of Four (G-4), consisting of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, have been at the forefront of the demands for organisational reforms in the United Nations to reflect the changed world order and representation from them in key decision-making wings.

“This year, India will host a summit of G-4 leaders in New York where the main agenda will be UNSC reforms,” said Modi in a statement ahead of his visit to Ireland and the US beginning on Wednesday.

Last week, the United Nations had adopted a text that set the stage for negotiations on UN Security Council reforms and how the powerful 15-nation body should be expanded in its permanent and non-permanent categories.

“The 70th anniversary of the UN is an apposite moment for reform discussions to be accelerated,” said Modi, noting that the UN General Assembly had finally adopted a document after over 20 years that would form the basis of formal discussions on this matter.
